Tomas Lindberg Of At The Gates Loses Quiet Cancer Battle At 52

Humberto Saabedra

The world of extreme metal woke up to devastating news this morning, as Sweden’s public broadcaster SVT confirmed the news that Tomas Lindberg, lead vocalist and chief songwriter for At The Gates has passed away from complications stemming from treatment of oral cancer, otherwise known as adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), or salivary gland cancer. Lindberg initially revealed that he received the diagnosis in December 2023 thru a message written March of this year, folded into a longer update released in August by the band detailing why the singer and the band had remained unusually quiet since their last run of live shows in 2022.

Lindberg had actually expressed hope to make a full and complete recovery despite needing surgery to remove a large portion of the roof of his mouth and additional chemotherapy to treat the remaining traces of cancer. However, the update last month likely foreshadowed this morning’s ultimately shocking news, with a band statement confirming that Lindberg was moved into a long-term care hospital in May of this year and was receiving around the clock care as a result of a medical setback that went undisclosed.

Tomas Lindberg was 52 years old. He is survived by his wife, children, once and former bandmates in At The Gates, Disfear, and countless other one-off appearances and collaborations.
