Pokemon Creators Game Freak Fanzine for $75 Per Issue in Tokyo
Humberto SaabedraWired Game|Life correspondent Chris Kohler recently found these issues of Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori’s Game Freak fanzine in a Tokyo area Mandarake Galaxy store going for the equivalent of $75. Game Freak would eventually morph in to the development studio responsible for the successful Pokemon franchise.
Sugimori’s artwork can be seen in image and the zine itself features information on the video games of the era as well as tips and strategies on some of the more difficult arcade games written in Tajiri’s “loopy handwriting” as described by Kevin Gifford of GameSetWatch.
The zine was published from 1981 to 1986 when both Tajiri and Sugimori had obtained enough professional magzine work to move on from the fanzine.
