Gamestop Canada Sold, Now Under Local Ownership
Humberto SaabedraThe perpetually beleaguered video game focused specialty retail chain GameStop has had little to celebrate in the past few months, but a rare positive development will see the retailer sell off the Canadian division of the business to a local Canadian retail entrepreneur who aims to revive the chain’s former identity as EB Games Canada before the chain was bought out and rebranded in 2021.
The purchase will see Stephan Tetrault lead the revived EB Games Canada, which will see all of the existing locations rebranded and renewed to reflect the chain’s previous heritage as EB Games and as a pillar of Canadian video game retail. Tetrault is no stranger to specialty retail, having also purchased a majority stake in the Canadian toy retailer Mastermind Toys in 2024.
Tetrault released the following statement regarding the acquisition:
“This isn’t just a business decision—it’s about bringing something back that Canadians truly loved,” said Stephan Tetrault, Owner and CEO of the newly rebranded EB Games Canada. “We’re going to build something special here, with community, nostalgia, and innovation at its heart.”
More details regarding the transformation and rebranding will be released in the future.
Prior to today’s announcement, GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen made a series of belligerent tweets in which the executive called out Canada and France for “High taxes, Liberalism, Socialism, Progressivism, Wokeness and DEI” and sought buyers for both GameStop Canada and the French division run under the name Micromania.
