Dir En Grey's Different Sense Video Features Mahou Shojo Ai (NSFW)
Humberto SaabedraJapanese metal band Dir En Grey has a video out for the single “Different Sense” and in keeping with the bamd’s brooding and nhilistic aesthetic features biting commentary on the March 11th earthquake and nuclear disaster set against morbid imagery of tentacles.
What sets the incredibly graphic video apart is its usage of footage from Mahou Shoujo Ai, released in the US as Sexy Magical Girl by defunct label JapanAnime and currently out of print. The US release was also known for being incomplete as only four out of the five total volumes were released, with speculation that former distributor JapanAnime refused to release the fifth volume due to legal concerns.
The release of the video is followed up with news that the band’s US sales numbers for their latest release Dum Spiro Spero have been released with around 3,900 copies in the United States in its first week of release (week of August 2nd) to debut at position No. 135 on The Billboard 200 chart and landing at No. 2 on the Top New Artist Heatseekers chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
