Studio Ghibli States Desire to Produce Film Without Aid of Nuclear Power

In a statement to the press on Friday, representatives from Studio Ghibli expressed a desire to produce a feature film without the aid of nuclear power following the unraveling of TEPCO and the ensuing media firestorm that ensued and still continues as a result of the regulator’s failings to directly and honestly report the activities in the Fukushima power plant in the wake of the March 11th Tohoku earthquake to the media and those directly affected.
To that end, the animation studio hung a banner over its studio offices proclaiming its desire to produce a feature film free from nuclear power, which garnered attention on Twitter and Japanese media coverage. Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki is a well-known opponent of nuclear power in Japan and has interspersed themes of environmentalism into his films.
The studio is currently ramping up marketing to release its next film in Kokuri Kozaka Hana after successfully completing The Borrower Arriety, which is adapted from the English children’s book The Borrowers authored by Mary Norton. Arriety The Borrower will be released in the US in February 2012 by Disney with voice acting by Amy Pohler, Will Arnett and Carol Burnett.
