One Piece Strong World, Midori-ko Earn Canadian Screenings in October
Humberto SaabedraThe Ottawa International Animation Festival will mark the North American theatrical debut of the 10th One Piece film in One Piece: Strong World as well as the North American debut of Keita Kurosaka’s first feature length independent production Midori-ko after having his previous shorts screened during the Winnipeg Plastic Paper film festival earlier this summer. Both Midori-ko and One Piece Strong World are also entered into the OIAF’s Feature Film competition for overall honors.
One Piece Strong World Synopsis:
Luffy and his crew set sail for the ocean territory of East Blue. Their quest takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious flying pirate ship and band of pirates — arr, matey — appears out of the sky, piloted by none other than the legendary Golden Lion Shiki, who sends the crew on a whirlwind adventure, during which they must confront terrifying beasts and unfamiliar terrain in a battle for survival.
Midori-ko Synopsis:
A surreal vision of a 21st-century Tokyo that is rapidly approaching starvation, the film tells the story of a young woman who, while working to develop a “dream food” that will end the city’s hunger crisis, encounters a mysterious creature that transforms her life. Kurosaka’s animation emerges through conflicting expressions of motion and stillness, lightness and darkness, rest and explosion, immersing audiences in a powerful symbiosis of story, mood and image. Grotesque and dreamlike, Midori-ko possesses both a luminous and ethereal quality that gives substance to the peculiar beauty of its story and characters.
