EFF Launches HTTPS Encryption Plugin for Android Firefox Browser

HTTPS EverywhereIn the wake of all of the recent concerns over spying and information being leaked over wireless connections in recent months, the Electronic Frontier Foundation has announced that it has ported its desktop HTTPS encryption extension for Firefox to Mobile Firefox for Android. The plugin is free from their site, however the organization did confirm that it would not be able to do the same for the iOS version of the browser.

What the plugin proposes to do is act as a browser extension that encrypts communications between mobile devices and web sites. The EFF claims HTTPS Everywhere will offer mobile device owners a higher level of security by switching insecure HTTP connections to secure HTTPS connections, such as Web sites that might otherwise have been transmitted openly in HTTP will now be encrypted to block third parties, ISPs, and others from spying on or interfering with the device owner’s information with the extension enabled.

The EFF did not immediately offer any additional information on whether it would port the extension to other mobile browsers besides Mobile Firefox for Android, as it currently offers the same plugin for the desktop versions of Opera, Firefox and Chrome.
