AT&T MediaFLO Launch Details, Changes to Data Plans Surface

Engadget Mobile has unveiled exclusive details on AT&T’s launch of MediaFLO mobile TV service now expected sometime later in the first quarter and changes to their current data plan structure to align more competitively with other carriers.

First, AT&T will be launching MediaFLO service this year after missing their intended Fall 2007 launch, and will now be offering two exclusive channels that remain unannounced at this time.

Unlike Verizon’s initial launch of MediaFLO in March being extremely limited, AT&T is stating that 159 million customers in 53 cities will be covered when the service launches later in the first quarter, a far cry from the 12 markets that Verizon started with in March 2007. The two devices that will be launched with the service remain unannounced, but one that has been confirmed unofficially is the LG Vu

In a bid to remain competitive with other carriers on the data front and tackle abuse of such services, AT&T will begin to impose a 5GB data transfer soft limit similar to Verizon’s data services, as well as eliminate the now loaded term “unlimited” from its smart device/aircard data services literature and advertising beginning on January 20th.
